Syed
Amir Ali was born on 6th April 1849 at Cuttack in Orissa. He was a
lawyer, spokesman and writer. In 1873 he published his first work titled as Critical
Examination of the life and teachings of Mohammed(saw)1. He
founded National Mohammaden Association2 in 1877 which
further renamed as Central National Mohammaden Association3. He was a
member of Bengal Legislative council4 for the period of 1878
to 1883. He was also a member of Governor General’s Legislative council5
for the period of 1883 to 1885.
He
was loyal to the Raj and on willingness to compromise during the Ilbert
bill6 furore. In 1882 he also published a significant
article A cry from the Indian Mohammaden7 and in 1891 he
also published another article The Real Status of Women in Islam8.
He took his retirement in 1904 and permanently left India for England. In 1908
he became the founder president of the London branch of Muslim League and
created pressure for separate electorates for Muslims9
which was conceded in 1909.
He
played a vital role to establish Red Crescent10. He also
had his support for the khilafat movement11. He
was sidelined by 1920’s political uprising when it got a new dimension. He died
on 3rd August 1928.
