To many, this event was too localized to be considered part of a list that involves all of history. Yet, the shockwaves from this one event are still felt today. The American Revolution (1775-1783) took many ideas from the early civilizations of Greece and Rome and combined them with the Christian Bible to revolt against an authority that was unbending. They believed that every man (though at the time even that statement was narrowly defined) was equal and should be treated fairly. Only when the men and women of the new world rose up together was there a solid foundation for the beginning of a nation that in our modern world influences much around the globe. When an election is held in the United States, the world watches. The influence that America now has gives credence to the American Revolution being one of the greatest events in our history.

১৯৪৭ সালের ১৪ই আগস্ট পাকিস্তানের জন্মের মধ্যে দিয়ে পূর্ব বাংলার ভাগ্য নির্ধারিত হয়ে যায়। একটি সংকর জাতি হিসেবে বরাবরই অস্থির প্রকৃতির এই জাতিটি তার ধর্ম, বর্ণ, সংস্কৃতির মতই বৈচিত্র্যময়। ১৯৪৭ থেকে ২০১৬ সাল পর্যন্ত এই ৭০ বছরে জাতিটি যে পথ পরিক্রমা অতিক্রম করেছে তা সত্যিই তার জাতিগত ঐতিহ্যে কোন কিছু যোগ করেছে নাকি দিনে দিনে অন্ধকারের অতল গহ্বরে নিয়ে গেছে সেটা অবশ্যই ভাববার বিষয়। সময় তার নিজস্ব গতিতে অতিক্রান্ত হয়ে গেছে। পৃথিবীর বুকে অনেক অধঃপতিত জাতি মাথা তুলে দাঁড়িয়েছে। সিঙ্গাপুর, মালয়েশিয়া, থাইল্যান্ড কিংবা ভিয়েতনামের মতো দেশগুলো বিশেষ একটা ঈর্ষনীয় অবস্থানে চলে এসেছে। অনেক জাতি তার খাতায় অনেক কিছু যোগ করেছে। কোন কোন জাতি শুধুমাত্র সাংস্কৃতিক অর্জনের মধ্য দিয়ে বিশেষ নেতৃস্থানীয় অবস্থানে চলে এসেছে। এসব সাফল্যের খবর। আনন্দ আর আবেগের খবর। কিন্তু আমরা এই ৭০ বছরে কোথা থেকে কোথায় এলাম এটা ভেবে দেখেছি কি? এই দীর্ঘ সময়ে আমরা শুধুমাত্র অজস্র অমীমাংসিত প্রশ্নের জন্ম দিয়েছি যা নিয়ে আমাদেরকে আগামী আরও ২০০ বছর ঝাগড়া ঝাটি করতে হবে। এটা কোন অর্জন নয়। বরং এর চেয়ে আমরা যদি একটা জায়গায় স্থির হয়ে থাকতাম

একটা অজানা শংকা সারাক্ষণ তাড়িয়ে বেড়াচ্ছে। না জানি কখন কি হয়। ঘর থেকে বের হওয়ার সময় আগেও দোয়া পড়ে বের হতাম। আয়াতুল কুরসি এবং অন্যান্য দোয়া পড়ে বুকের উপর তিন ফুক। তারপর সুবহানাল্লাহ্ বলতে বলতে সিড়ি থেকে নিচে নামা। এর সাথে বর্তমানে যা যুক্ত হয়েছে তা হলো দরোজার কাছে দাঁড়িয়ে এই একই দোয়া দরূদ স্ত্রী এবং দুই কন্যা সহ চার জনে পড়ে অতঃপর সবাই সবার বুকে ফুক দিয়ে বাইরে বের হওয়া। ব্যাপারটা আগে স্বাভাবিক ভাবেই করতাম। ইদানিং এটা করার সময় গলা বুক শুকিয়ে আসে। কারণ আর কিছু নয়। একবার বাইরে বের হলে ঘরে ফিরব তো? হঠাৎ করে এই ভাবনা কেন পেয়ে বসল। তার কারণ কারোরই অজানা নয়। এটা অদৃশ্য ভীতি আর শংকার মধ্যে দিয়ে যাচ্ছি আমরা। মুখ ফুটে কিছু বলি আর না বলি এটাই সত্য। যদিও এ পর্যন্ত কোনো কিছুই মহামারীর আকার ধারন করেনি। তবুও শান্তির সময়ে সামান্য অশান্তিও অনেক বেশী আতংক সৃষ্টি করে। একটা যুদ্ধ কালীন পরিস্থিতিতে অনেক কিছুই ঘটবে বলে ধরে নেওয়া হয়। কিন্তু বর্তমানে সেরকম কোন সময় এখনও আসেনি। তবুও খেলা জমে উঠেছে। ভীতির খেলা। যারা মাঠে নেমে পড়েছে তারা অদৃশ্য। সবাই যার যার মতো বলে। আসলে আমার মনে হয় লোকগুলো এখনও ধরা ছোঁয়ার বাইরে।
